This weekend, Varese will host the second edition of their Granfondo Tre Valli Varesine and a test-event for the World Championships of 2018.
The individual time trial on Saturday is an out-an-back loop of 22km on mainly flat roads with start and finish at the Varese Hippodrome. Riders can still register until Thursday night to join the almost 300 pre-registered riders.
The road races on Sunday have a Granfondo course of 130km (1993m of elevation) and a Mediofondo course of 103km (1447m of elevation). The Granfondo is the official qualifying distance for men 19-59 and women 19-49. All Men over 60 and women over 50 will have to opt for the Mediofondo to qualify. 2500 riders have pre-registered.
After the start in Varese, the road races head towards the Lago di Luggano for some tough climbing along the lake to then continue towards the Lago Maggiore where the Mediofondo takes a shortcut to reconnect to the Granfondo course a bit further. The last part is easier along the Lago di Varese to finish back at the Varese Hippodrome where Alessandro Ballan became Elite World Champion in 2008.
3 Valli Varesine has also some famous guests at the start with former Spanish triple Elite World Champion Oscar Freire and Italian stars Ivan Basso, Daniele Nardello and Noemi Cantele. Italian TV-host Filippa Lagerback will also attend the event as participant.
